Procedure

  • With the window closed, cut in around the pane(s) of glass and paint any glazing bars starting from the top and working downwards.
  • Open the window and paint the back edge of the sash taking care not to paint over moving parts of the hinges.
  • Next paint the face of the frame, using long brushstrokes along the grain of the wood.
  • Try not to overload your brush with too much paint as this will encourage runs.
  • Paint the inner side of the frame.
  • Paint the face of the frame and cut in the edge next to the wall.
  • Finally paint the window sill, on the underside first, then the sides and the front face, finishing off with the top surface.

It is recommended that gloss or vinyl silk paint is used for the top coat on window frames as they are the most hard wearing.
