Calculating The Amount of Paint Required

 
 

Introduction

The amount of paint required to cover a given surface will, of course, depend on the size of the surface to be covered, however, the amount needed can also vary depending on the type of surface to be painted, and by the type of paint required for the job.

For example;

  • Most paints go further on old (thoroughly dried) plaster work than new.
  • Bricks absorb much more paint (especially the first coat) than plasterwork or wood.
  • Water based Emulsions cover more Square Metres (SqM) per Litre than equivalent oil based paints.

How much paint do I need?

Most paint covers between 11 SqM and 14 SqM of surface area per Litre. Use the links below for paint calculators specific to the type of paint you wish to use;
