Bespoke joinery companies will make windows to measure, but expect to pay a hefty fee for such a service, and to wait longer for production.
Alternatively, manufacturers produce windows in a reasonable range of fixed, standard sizes, with the widest range being available in wood and uPVC, and since these can be mass produced, they are somewhat more cost-effective than a made-to-measure service.
These frames come in a range of heights that move up in increments of 150mm (6in) since this is equivalent to two brick courses (or layers with mortar in between).
The width of window frames is not quite so logical. Originally made to fit with bricks that were 215mm (8½in) long, window widths have also been generated to fit bricks that are 300mm (12in) long according to an EU directive, even though we still generally use the smaller bricks.
