Common Door Sizes

Introduction

Modern homes are usually built with standard sized joinery, thus doors are manufactured in a range of standard sizes. Several companies do exist nevertheless who will make doors to measure, although this is generally the more expensive option.

External Doors

Standard thicknesses are 40mm (1⅝ in) and 44mm (1¾ in). Make sure you use the correct thickness to match any existing doorframe to ensure the door is flush with it when closed. Failure to do this will require that the door stop strips of the doorframe are repositioned.

Standard heights and widths are;

  • 1981mm (6ft 6in) x 762mm (2ft 6in)
  • 1981mm (6ft 6in) x 838mm (2ft 9in)
  • 2032mm (6ft 8in) x 813mm (2ft 8in)
  • 2057mm (6ft 9in) x 838mm (2ft 9in)
  • 2083mm (6ft 10in) x 863mm (2ft 10in)
  • 2134mm (7ft) x 914mm (3ft)

Internal Doors

Standard thicknesses are 35mm (1⅜in), 44mm (1¾in) and 51mm (2in). Make sure you use the correct thickness to match any existing doorframe to ensure the door is flush with it when closed. Failure to do this will require that that door stop strips of the doorframe are repositioned.

Several standard heights and widths are available, with plenty of scope for wider and narrower doorways, such as walk-in and under-stairs cupboards;

  • 1981mm (6ft 6in) x 457mm (1ft 6in)
  • 1981mm (6ft 6in) x 533mm (1ft 9in)
  • 1981mm (6ft 6in) x 610mm (2ft)
  • 1981mm (6ft 6in) x 686mm (2ft 3in)
  • 1981mm (6ft 6in) x 762mm (2ft 6in)
  • 1981mm (6ft 6in) x 838mm (2ft 9in)
  • 2032mm (6ft 8in) x 813mm (2ft 8in)
  • 2083mm (6ft 10in) x 863mm (2ft 10in)
  • 2134mm (7ft) x 914mm (3ft)

  • No door should ever be excessively trimmed as this will weaken its structure. In the case of flush doors, you should not aim to plane away more than a couple of millimetres from any side.
