Wood Boring Weevils

What is it?

Wood boring weevils (Pentarthrum huttoni & Euophryum confine) use any wood that is already damp and decaying as a source of food for their larvae.

How to spot it

Adult exit holes are round but with a ragged edge and contain a coarse, gritty bore dust, or 'frass'. Tunnels run just below the surface, and may even often be exposed.

How to fix it

An infestation of wood boring weevils represents a secondary problem. The primary issue is that of the damp and fungal decay inherent in the wood it has attacked.

Simply drying the wood out by removing the source of dampness and ventilating will eliminate the weevils.

Any structurally weakened wood should be cut out and removed, and replaced with new timbers treated with preservative. If this woodwork was load-bearing (joist or roof truss) it should be replaced with new timbers that have been pre-treated with an effective preservative such as pressurisation, double vacuum methods or a 10-minute dip in an organic solvent preservative to satisfy the requirements of British Standard BS 5268. Remember to re-treat any cut-ends or joints.
