A spotlight on DIY Issues

45 year old artist and filmmaker, Tim Green, has been inspired by the classic ‘Catchphrase’ gameshow and various bits of DIY ‘stuff’. The result is a range of pieces that include these rather novel ‘Tap Shoes’ and ‘Sky Scraper’ (geddit?). These and many more of his works have been exhibited in Gloucestershire and London and you can see them here; we particularly like ‘Racing Driver’ and ‘Sea Saw’. Nice work!

If it’s not socks, the quintessential backup plan for a Christmas pressie has to be a DVD, CD or book, and you’re no doubt wondering where to store all your festive swag. Never fear! We’ve put together the simplifyDIY guide to shelving to talk you through all the options and even how to put them up (straight!).

Thanks to our friend Gordon who invented this game during a ‘quiet night in’. You will need:

  • Two identical copies of the NEW Argos catalogue
  • At least one friend to be your opponent
  • Another friend to be Gamesmaster

It’s a race to see who can find the product named by the Gamesmaster the fastest…and absolutely NO looking in the index is allowed; that’s cheating!

On your marks…find the DeWalt 18V Cordless Hammer Drill….now find the Cream Waffle Shower Curtain…now find the Black & Decker Strimmer… Hours of fun for all the family!

Let’s face it, every single DIY job takes longer than you think it will, and most probably reveals even more jobs that need doing…I’m picturing drilling into a wall and making a crater rather than a hole. Oh good!

But that’s why The Money Pit, the 1986 movie starring Tom Hanks, is so good. No matter how badly your ‘quick bit’ of home improvement is going, it can’t be worse than their’s…and it does help you see the funny side.

Well, actually there’s no paper involved. 35 year old designer Eric Barrett has pioneered a method to cast textured wallpaper into bare concrete walls. Used inside or outside and available in a range of colours, sizes and bespoke patterns, this technique could spell the end of barren, industrial-looking concrete walls. Go to concrete-blond.com for more info.

The team at SimplifyDIY wish you a very prosperous 2007.

Please do drop us a line with your thought of the day or for some DIY advice, or both!
